Six: The New Viticulturist

ANTHONY CHECKED THE time on his phone. He was happy with his morning’s work in the wine room, and wished, not for the first time, that it was his primary responsibility. He tugged the stained apron over his head and ate the lunch he’d brought from the house, though it was only eleven thirty and he probably wouldn’t get to eat again until seven.

He’d placed an ad for viticulturist and given Katie his list of specific requirements, allowing her to set up the interviews. He didn’t normally delegate, but with the charity drive going on, he handled a lot of calls, questions, and concerns from the volunteers.

Surprisingly, Katie had seemed excited about the additional responsibility. He knew she loved the winery, but she was always eager to leave when the tasting room closed.

“There was a better response than I expected,” she said, “But oh my god. Most of them weren’t qualified to lick boots. Anyway—” She passed him four manila folders. “—these are the only decent applicants. You’re interviewing the bottom folder today at one. I figured just after lunch was the best time, before you got involved in other stuff.”

“Thank you,” he said. “Katie, this is awesome.”

She grinned. “I know, right? It was fun. I wouldn’t mind doing more stuff like that.”

The door jingled before he could reply, and she ducked out of his office. His office was accessed off the small hallway to the emergency exit; he couldn’t see the tasting room from his open door, and that meant customers couldn’t see him either. He had limited social skills and tried to avoid people when he could.

If Katie’s confidence was justified, maybe he’d ask her to specify the type of “stuff” she’d like to do. Each file had sticky notes in Katie’s neat hand. This one is pretty good, but mostly just for comparison, the top note said. The bottom file, the one he was interviewing this afternoon, read, I’d hire this one if it was up to me. Assuming he’ll take the money you can offer.

The second-to-last file said, Second best. Also—female. Feel bad I can’t recommend her as number one. The note on the third file said, Not bad, but only if you can’t get one of the others.

It amused him that Katie was so confident in her ability to judge the resumes on his given criteria. He skimmed all four candidates and was impressed that Katie had nailed it. The interviews would tell, though.

He put the first three folders in his file drawer and was abruptly reminded of the lube and condoms he’d put in the drawer above it. Not the petty-cash drawer or the one with the staples, which were the two Katie or Leigh were most likely to open while he was away from the desk. He probably didn’t mean it. I was pretty rude after… Oh for fuck’s sake, you’ve got work to do. Right.

He pulled off the sticky notes and opened the file, attention going immediately to education and experience.
